Sunscreen, Skin Checks, and Staying Alive—Your 3-Step Plan to Prevent Skin Cancer

We’re not here to scare you. We’re here to make this simple.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. But it’s also the most preventable. And melanoma? When you catch it early, survival rates are almost 100%.

Here’s your 3-step game plan to keep your skin safe—and your life on track.

Step 1: Sunscreen Every. Single. Day.

  • SPF 30 or higher

  • Broad-spectrum (protects from UVA + UVB rays)

  • Apply to all exposed skin—face, ears, neck, hands, chest

  • Reapply every 2 hours (or after swimming/sweating)

  • Don’t skip cloudy days. UV rays are still there.
📌 Pro tip: You need a shot glass worth for your whole body.

Step 2: Avoid Peak Sun Hours

  • 10 AM to 4 PM is prime time for UV exposure.

  • Seek shade.

  • Wear UPF clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses.

  • And yes, tanning beds? A hard no.

Step 3: Skin Checks—Monthly and Yearly

  • Do a full-body self-check every month.

  • Look for anything new, changing, or unusual (ABC… you know the drill).

  • Get a professional skin exam once a year.
(If you’re at higher risk? You might need more frequent checks. We can help you figure that out.)

Dr. Shore started our Skin Check Program to make this easy. Simple appointments, clear next steps, and no waiting around.

Bottom Line:

You can’t control everything. But you can control this. Sunscreen. Skin checks. Smarter sun habits.
